Adorable, unique, family friendly inn! My sister and I stayed here not last night but the night before on our road trip from Vegas to Denver. I called for a reservation about 6 hours before we arrived, and I was able to book a room. Staff - extremely friendly and helpful. The woman at the front remembered me from my call 5 hours earlier. Also, the woman at the desk in the morning let my sister and I use her computer to check the weather in monarch's pass since the wifi was not working. Room - The room was small, but it was clean and comfortable. We had enough space for the two of us, and we felt safe. We had a room on the second level, and we had a beautiful view of the river in the morning. Cafe - Food was good, and the service was quick. We showed up about 15 min before closing, and they allowed us to get food. It was very nice of them. We recommend this hotel for a few days! It is right at the top of the Monument Valley where you can hike and take in the scenery!

Stayed here for two nights while on a road trip in July 2015, but had been here back in 2006 as well. The rooms are okay. Some of them have three beds which is nice, but they aren't very comfortable. The sink isn't in the bathroom which is kind of odd. Overall though, the rooms are fine and can't complain too much. The restaurant is meh. I remember really liking it back in 06 but this time not as much. We went here our first night, and I got the veggie taco. I thought it was kind of odd that it came out in less than five minutes, but it was good - filling! We then ate breakfast here the next day, and my brother's plate was a little dirty and his cereal six months expired. I enjoyed my food as did my parents and family friends. Fast forward a few hours and my stomach starts getting very upset. Then my brothers, then my moms (my dad has a stomach made of steel, I swear). My brother and I figured it must be the restaurant and wouldn't go back, however there's not many restaurants whatsoever around here. Luckily there's a little store (where you check in) where you can get food. We got dinner and microwaved it there, then breakfast the next day (yogurt, muffins, etc). Free tea! The hotel is on the river which is lovely. There are tables overlooking it and you can go down to it as well. The hotel is situated near many scenic areas.

Didn't think it was worth $99 plus tax but I get that it's the last place to lay your head before Monument Valley. The room was okay. Two double beds. We would have preferred a King but that's all they had. We checked in just before sunset. Got a non smoking room but could still smell the cigarette smoke of those smoking upstairs and outside. Not enough lighting in the room. There was no bath soap in our bathroom. Husband had to go to the front desk to get some. They should not advertise free wifi as an amenity. It's awful and restricted. Slow. And slower. And you're given a token/convoluted code for ONE device. iPhone? iPad? Or laptop? Wow. Breakfast at the on-property Grill run by a Navajo family was nice. They were accommodating enough to make me fry bread for breakfast.

Eww. The stellar location and the friendly donkey living down by the river are the reasons for the 2nd star. Otherwise, this place would get 1 star from me. The room (#25), with a double bed and a queen bed, is so tiny as to be comprised of mainly bed. There is nothing to set anything on, there is not even a little freshman fridge for drinks or food, and there is a tiny old TV. Despite how many people this room sleeps (on paper, anyway), there is only one drinking cup provided. Serious thrift in action. Ah it's the details that make a place, eh. Well, the room literally SMELLS LIKE HUMAN POO. I mean, vividly. Beneath an industrial dose of Lysol or similar stench abatement product, that is. So you know they know, right? I think I traced the smell to the sink drain. I imagine it's a sewer issue and not much to be done for this one night we're here. Add all this to the desk clerk's heavily negative attitude - saying completely unfounded negative and transparently competitive things about another, actually excellent business in town - and it all equals a big stay away. Bummer. It seems like it could be very nice. It looks neat and what a nifty location. But yeah - AVOID.

Between the Grand Canyon and Moab is a hotel/motel wasteland. We were leaving the Grand Canyon about 7pm and didn't have it in us to drive all the way to Moab (which turned out to be a good thing because ALL the hotels were booked). We were traveling with our dog which makes things MUCH more difficult in terms of finding a place to stay. We called the San Juan in, and they had a room AND they were pet friendly with a $15 fee. We got there around 10:45pm, the room was definitely sparse, but adequate. The bed was one of he most uncomfortable things I have ever encountered, but at least we weren't sleeping in the car. The room was very clean, and the cable worked. In the morning I was taking a shower in their TINY, dilapidated shower, when my husband flushed the toilet.... It literally scalded me so badly I had to jump out completely. The water didn't return to warm for a good two minutes. So be careful of that, I really have never seen that anywhere but in movies. I wouldn't call this place charming, cozy, or cute. It's a motel- but it provided everything we needed and it was clean. That's pretty much all you can ask for in the middle of nowhere.

Really love this place and can't wait to go back. Hope that sums it up. We stayed at the San Juan Inn & Trading Post in mid-May of 2014. I had made reservations by telephone and, big city broad that I am, was holding my breath, not knowing quite what to expect. When we arrived, we found the folks in the office/trading post to be efficient, warm, and friendly. Our room was quite large and very pleasant. Set up to sleep five, it had two queen beds and a single. The bed was a terrific surprise. It felt like one of those fancy memory foam mattresses, and it was heaven to sleep on. The bathroom was huge, with a big wooden bench and lots of hooks on the wall. No tub (not an issue here), and a great shower. Our room faced the San Juan River, which runs right next to the property, and there was a small outdoor table and chairs on the walkway outside our room. Only two minor quibbles: the windows didn't open and the air conditioning unit was just barely adequate for the large room. It's an interesting place, built into the side of a red sandstone cliff with the river right there next to it. We've never quite seen anyplace like it. My only regret is that we were only able to stay for one night--I'm ready to go back for a few days more.

This is an interesting establishment. It's just across the San Juan from AZ. We pulled in here for a picnic lunch after a morning of exploring Monument Valley. As other Yelpers have said, this business is right over the river. We parked next to a nice picnic table, and absorbed the view of the river. I'm sure Forrest Gump ran by here on his way to Monument Valley. "And that's all I have to say 'bout that."

Not much to choose from in Mexican Hat, so this place had to do. I ordered the special breakfst burritto and it was anything but. The service was spotty, the quality of the food fair. The other guys ordered similar meals with the same reaction, nothing bad nothing good. Just food to fill your belly and ride on.

Didn't stay here, but breakfast in the cafe overlooking the river was great. Very nice staff.

As the old Monty Python show used to say, "And now for something completely different!" This place is pretty cool. If you are touring the Navajo Nation, and Monument Valley in particular, this is a great location to end up after a long day in the sun. Our room was upstairs adjacent to a seemingly newly updated patio area, overlooking the San Juan River. Beautiful patio with nice outdoor furniture, great place to have a few beers and watch the sun set. Rooms were very clean with limited amenities- No coffee maker or microwave, which makes it necessary to visit their on site cafe. Large HDTV was nice, and there is wi-fi there as well. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful. Place has a little store/gift shop as well, as it appears that river rafters stop in for supplies every so often. $88 bucks a night for room with queen sized bed. 1/2 an hour to Goosenecks State Park and Monument Valley makes this a great location as well. Very charming place.

I have stayed here twice and if you know Utah like I do, you arnt going to find much for miles. This place does the job. Is it fancy? No, but most people spend only one night. It has clean beds a shower and working AC. That should be all you expect from a place like Mexican hat. Staff are friendly and there is a shop and restaurant next door. Oh and bug free.

Nice rooms, nice view and even quite very pleasant, BUT THE WORST THING IS THAT THEY'LL ONLY GIVE YOU 1 CODE (I.E. 1 USE) FOR THE INTERNET!. Once my computer kicked me off, I could no longer use the internet and sharing a room with another person, he had to call and complain in order to get another code. During our stay everyone was asking if we had an extra code, and thus everyone was complaining about not being able to get on the internet. SO, if you're not looking to get online, this really is a great place.

CHARMING AND UNIQUE Stay here in this tiny village instead of in Blanding or Kayenta. The room was clean and southwest-y, beds had memory foam toppers, the price was right ($115 peak-season for large room with 3 beds) and the location was amazing. Perched on the edge of a cliff on the San Juan and next to the bridge, this inn is your last stop before the Navajo Nation/Reservation. After having a meal in their little restaurant, you can sit on a balcony or on the cliff and watch the sunset, listen to the river, and watch the stars come out. Mexican Hat is about as off the path as you can get, and few travelers can say they have stayed here. Aside from being remote, it's also a pleasant place to stay and confers bragging rights as one of the most remote and isolated settlements in the entire United States. Wonderful!

Food was medicore, but I give extra points for being open the day after thanksgiving, where we couldn't have lunch till 5pm, as everything was closed. Ate the vege taco (retried beans on fry bread). It lacks seasoning, but the bread was good.

Stayed one night on way to Monument Valley. Room rate was reasonable and clean, but certainly not a bargain as the room was quite spartan. Nice location, right by the river. Was a bit confused by the Inn's sign. While it refers to itself as an "inn", their sign says hotel. Forgot to show my AAA membership card at check-in for AAA discount. When I mentioned it to the registration clerk a couple of hours later, she refused to give me the discount.

This review is only for the restaurant, since we didn't stay at the motel. We had breakfast consisting of Denver and ham&cheese omelettes, pancakes with fruits and toasts with jelly. And coffee, of course, which was very fresh and strong, yet not burnt. The service was quick and unobtrusive. Also, we had a chance to talk to the owner who gave us a couple of tips where to go to see very interesting places. We sat by the window and enjoyed the view of San Juan river, which totally complemented our entire breakfast.

Roadside motel. Very nice location. When you're done for the day after visiting monument valley i would come back here. Rooms clean, friendly personnel. Bar & Grill next door. Right next to the river and the highway 163 bridge. You hear some noise from the street, but it's really not much.

Came on, it's Mexican Hat. You expect a frontier motel and that's what it is, we liked it

Small rooms, tidy enough but very basic shower. I might have enjoyed the experience more if we hadn't had an early start.
